I recently had an extremely troubling experience at UPMC Shadyside, and I feel a responsibility to share what occurred so others can make informed decisions about their care.
Prior to admission, an administrative nurse sat with me to verify all of my current medications. I was thorough in reviewing each one I was actively taking, ensuring there would be no confusion once I was admitted. Despite this careful process, when the nursing staff eventually brought in what was supposed to be my daily medications, I was shocked to discover that they included prescriptions I am not currently taking, while completely omitting the essential medications I actually rely on.
When I questioned the staff about this serious error, there was no urgency, no correction, and no alternative care plan offered. I was left without critical medications, and my concerns were met with dismissiveness rather than the professionalism or accountability I expected from a hospital of this size and reputation. The result was an unsafe and negligent environment that placed my health at risk.
Due to the hospital’s failure to provide even the most basic level of care — including administering the correct medications — I made the difficult decision to leave for my own safety. Shockingly, as I was trying to leave, hospital security attempted to stop me, as though I did not have the right to walk out. Last time I checked, a hospital is not a prison. I am a patient, not an inmate. No one should ever feel trapped in a facility that is actively failing to meet their medical needs.
Hospitals are supposed to be safe, supportive places that provide competent and compassionate care. Sadly, my experience at UPMC Shadyside was the complete opposite. I urge anyone considering this facility to proceed with caution and be prepared to advocate relentlessly for your own health — because it seems that no one else there will do it for you.
I hope UPMC Shadyside leadership takes these serious failures to heart and implements meaningful changes to prevent this from happening to other patients in the future.
Horrible floor at night 2 South. Wife is cancer patient supposed to be watched. She is very very sick. She calls the nurse button and no answer for 30 minutes. I personally timed it. Pump beeping for 30 minutes. This makes me very concerned to leave at night. I really think Pittsburgh needs better health care. Nurses and aide don’t care at night. More concerned with phone and social networking. Very very very poor leadership. Obviously they only are concerned with paycheck and friends.
I encourage anyone reading this post to go to the MAYO CLINIC. The entire network cares. All applicants must pass course in patient care. No personal cell phones during work. They only allow personal communications during break or lunch.
UPMC ignore patients.
My mother passed at this hospital last night. Once I was able to get the Dr's to speak to me this team was very easy to work with. We had the privacy and assistance that was needed from the Dr's and nurses. They went above and beyond.
However, Please Note that you must watch them put the funeral home information in their computer or you will get home and they will not release the body.....apparently there is no follow through:(I would highly recommend a 2nd or 3rd opinion from more experienced specialists if you have an inoperable soft tissue Sarcoma. And a visit with a functional medicine practitioner, who can direct you to a possible root of the disease (parasites, chronic inflammation, diet) instead of focusing on treatments that offer a very poor quality of life and outcome overall. We had a success story in doing so.
My 82 year old parent recently had back surgery. While the procedure was minor compared to others, from what I observed there was no consideration for the additional level of care that a geriatric person with preexisting conditions would need pre or post-op. Yes, everyone was nice and the hospital was clean. There was almost no security to speak of. However if you are unable to advocate for yourself or your loved one, I would proceed with caution.
